Yoga begins with the person in front of me.
I adapt yoga for people with different physical, sensory and cognitive abilities. We begin with your interests, what feels comfortable and the ways you would like to participate.
I meet each person where they are, with respect for their abilities, interests and the ways they communicate. Together, we find ways to move, breathe and enjoy the practice.
Ask about adaptive yoga ↗Adaptive yoga begins with the person. We may practise in a chair or wheelchair, stand with support, or use a mat. I adapt the movements, instructions and pace, and use blocks, straps, blankets and other props when they are helpful.
Breathing, mindfulness and quiet moments are just as much a part of yoga as movement. There is no expectation that everyone will move in the same way. I pay attention to what feels comfortable, what holds interest and what helps each person take part. Resting, watching or choosing a different movement are all welcome.
Participants are invited to explore. They can take a break, say no or choose another way to participate.
I take time to build familiarity and trust. Listening includes noticing gestures, expressions and other ways of communicating.
I bring creativity and playfulness into the practice. Balls, blocks and straps can help make movement engaging and accessible.
Teaching individuals with IDD has deepened my understanding of what it means to listen, adapt and be present. Each person brings their own personality, preferences and experience to the room.
It has been the greatest honour of my life.
I want every participant to feel valued and included. My role is to create a welcoming space where people can be themselves, enjoy moving and know that their choices matter.
A session may include gentle stretches, seated or standing movements, simple breathing practices and time to rest. I adapt the session to the person or group, rather than expecting participants to follow a fixed routine.
My approach is trauma informed. I explain what we are doing, offer choices and respect personal space. I welcome input from participants and, where appropriate, the people who support them.
I bring equipment such as balls, yoga blocks and straps, choosing what is useful for the session. The aim is to make participation comfortable, meaningful and enjoyable.
I offer individual and group sessions. We can talk about interests, communication preferences, mobility, comfort and what a welcoming session could look like.
My background as a Gerontology Specialist and Yoga and Mindfulness Educator informs the care and thought I bring to this work.
